Installing

Windows

  1. Run johTalk_windows_x64-setup.exe.
  2. Windows may show “Windows protected your PC”. The installer isn't code-signed yet, which is why SmartScreen doesn't recognise it. Click More info, then Run anyway.
  3. Follow the installer, then open johTalk from the Start menu.

macOS

  1. Open johTalk_macos_arm64.dmg and drag johTalk into Applications.
  2. Open johTalk. When macOS asks for the microphone, click Allow.
  3. To let johTalk type for you, turn it on in System Settings, Privacy & Security, Accessibility.

Needs an Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or newer). The app is signed and notarized by Apple.

Linux

AppImage, any distribution:

chmod +x johTalk_linux_x86_64.AppImage
./johTalk_linux_x86_64.AppImage

Debian or Ubuntu:

sudo apt install ./johTalk_linux_amd64.deb

Typing on Wayland needs ydotool with its ydotoold service running and access to /dev/uinput (usually by being in the input group). X11 uses xdotool. For the clipboard, install wl-clipboard (Wayland) or xclip (X11).

johTalk's Settings, Account page shows which typing tools it found and the command that fixes a missing one.

    Press Unlock

    johTalk opens johflow.com in your browser with a short code already filled in.

    Sign in and pay

    Use Apple or Google, then pay $5.99 with Stripe. If you already own it, there's nothing to pay.

  3. 3

    Approve and talk

    Confirm the computer's name, go back to johTalk, and press your shortcut.
